ABSTRACT

This study investigated the perception of corporal punishment among students of the University of Benin. The study became necessary due to the changes in beliefs and attitudes towards punishment and the disciple systems in the society. The study is anchored on the tenets of cultural relativism and social learning theories. Using survey design, a 18- item questionnaire was employed to elicit data from 100 students randomly selected. The sample represented and reflected students from various levels in the University. Data obtained was presented and analyzed with the aid of frequency tables. It was found that corporal punishment is the most prevalent form of punishment and is perceived to be an effective and necessary disciplinary measure. This is because the use of corporal punishment is engraved in the culture and religion; hence it is seen as a basic method of punishment. Therefore the study concluded that students perceive corporal punishment as a regularly used and necessary.
