ABSTRACT

Background: Mobile Drug Authentication System is a system that allows patients or consumers to verify drugs or medicines if they are original or fake through a short message service (SMS). It is a mobile health technology deployed to hinder the spread of falsified medicines to consumers in Nigeria.

Objectives: The main objective is to investigate the perception of a sample of Nigerians towards the Mobile Authentication Service (MAS) used in the identification of genuine medicines. The specific objectives are to determine the perception of respondents towards the MAS and to assess the relationship between demographic factor and the perception towards the MAS

Methods: A convenient randomized cross sectional sample was used to investigate the perception of the public towards the Mobile Drug Authentication Service. A self developed and validated structured questionnaire, based on Technology Acceptance Model, was distributed to over 490 respondents to explore the public’s views of challenges and successes of MAS deployment in Nigeria.

Results: Over 75% of respondents who have previously used the Mobile Drug Authentication Service had a favorable perception (75.01 ± 8.00) towards MAS while 74% of the respondents who are aware of this service had a favorable perception (74.40 ± 8.21) towards MAS.
