ABSTRACT
The nursing process is a scientific systematic method which the nurse utilizes to plan and provide individualized care to client. Nursing process emphasizes on the essential activities that must be taken to address clientsnursing diagnosis and to managecollaborative problems or complications. The process is divided into fivedistinct steps which include; assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation. The objective of this study is to ascertain the perception and utilization of the nursing process in patient care among undergraduate nurses in the University of Benin. The study was carried out using a descriptive cross sectional study a non-experimental design. A total of one hundred and fifty student nurses were sampled from the population, data was gotten from a well structured questionnaire and a proforma was used to assess the level of practice of the nursing process in selected classes. The result from the study shows that majority of the undergraduate nurses had good knowledge of what nursing process is, and the study also shows that the nurses have negative attitude to the process. The level of practice of nursing process is high due to hospital policy and self efficacy among other factors influenced the utilization of the nursing process. In conclusion, majority of the undergraduate nurses had good knowledge of the nursing process but have negative attitude. Also the level of practice is high due to hospital policy and self efficacy was a major factor that influenced the use of nursing process among undergraduate nurses of university of benin.
