ABSTRACT

This research work is centered on the perception and utilization of condom as a preventive measure against sexually transmitted infections among selected male undergraduates in the university of Benin. The research design adopted was descriptive cross-sectional design to identify the perception and utilization of condoms as a measure against sexually transmitted infections which involved the collection of data from respondents by using self-administered questionnaires in describing the characteristics of the population. With a sample size of 282, 280 was completely filled; recording a 99% response rate. Using the chi-square statistical tool of data analysis to test the research hypotheses, it was found that there is a significant relationship between perception and utilization of condoms against sexually transmitted infections with a p-value <0.003 which indicate a positive perception towards condom use as preventive measures against STI by male undergraduates in University of Benin. It also observed that the awareness of condom and its usage is quite high but however dissatisfied its use due to the fact that it interferes with sexual pleasure. The study therefore recommended that government should create a medium whereby male undergraduates and members of the society should be enlightened about the use of condom and healthcare providers should develop their skills in condom counseling.
