ABSTRACT

The study investigated the perceived methods of teaching refuse disposal practices among lower basic pupils in Benin City. To guide this study, four research questions were raised. The study adopted the descriptive survey design. The population for this study comprised all early childhood teachers in private pre-primary schools in Benin City. The sample size for the study was one hundred (100) Early childhood education teachers selected through purposive sampling technique from registered private preprimary school in Benin City. The research instrument used in the study was a structured questionnaire. The findings revealed that while pupils are aware of proper refuse disposal practices, their actual behaviors often deviate from this knowledge which shows the gap between awareness and practice. While Teachers recognize the importance of interactive and visual teaching methods, leading to improved learning outcomes towards effective refuse disposal behavior, notable barriers were also recognized to be common hindrance to effective refuse disposal practices. The study recommends that, Edo State Government and School Operators should organize specialize training program for lower basic teachers which focus on the effective use of teaching methods for refuse disposal awareness and also invest in improving access to refuse disposal facilities.
