PERCEIVED INFLUENCES OF DRUG ABUSE ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceived influences of drug abuse on academic performance among undergraduate in University of Benin. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. Literature related to the topic was extensively reviewed. Survey research design will be used for this study. This is appropriate because survey research design enable the investigator to describe certain variable in relation to a certain population.

The population of this study comprises of 32,425 undergraduate students of Faculty of Education, University Benin, Benin City. The sample size for the study was one hundred and thirty-two (132) students. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select the respondents. A self-structure questionnaire was used for data collection. A test retest reliability was used and it yielded a coefficient of 0.78. Data was analysed using mean and standard deviation.

The findings revealed that Non-chalant attitude of parents, parental Lifestyle, Peer group influence, financial incapability and curiosity are the perceived reasons for drug abuse. Based on the finding from the study, the following recommendations were made; Schools should involve and encourage students in extra-curricular activities. School should provide guidance and counseling service. Schools should organize campaign on drug abuse.
