ABSTRACT

Preoperative anxiety is one condition that is common among surgical patients and with it comes great consequences including surgical complications and even death of patients. This though can be allayed, and one of the measures to do this is the perioperative nursing previsit. This study was conducted to determined the influence perioperative nursing previsit has on t he anxiety levels of surgical patients. The experimental research design was employed in this study and a tailored Hamilton anxiety scale was used as the tool to collect data from 166 patients in the four surgical units in University of Benin Teaching Hospital. The sample size was split evenly into two groups with 88 patients serving as the control and 88 as the intervention group. The result of the study that of the control group: 36 patients (43.37%) showed very severe anxiety, 42(50.6%) showed severe anxiety, 4(4.819%) showed moderate anxiety and 0% had mild anxiety. However,  of those that the previsit was carried out on: 0% showed very severe or severe anxiety, 6(7.228%) showed moderate anxiety and 76(91.56%) patients showed mild to no anxiety. The level of anxiety in the intervention group and that of those in the control group showed a correlation of (p < 2.2e-16) which shows that there is a significant relationship between the perioperative nursing previsit and anxiety levels of surgical patients. The study also showed that some aspects of the sociodemographic data (age, marital status, surgical history) of the patients influenced their anxiety levels while others (Gender and Educational background) had no effect on the anxiety levels of the patients. The study therefore concluded that the perioperative nursing previsit is important in curbing the anxiety levels of surgical patients and thus the practice has to be improved on in order to expedite surgical complications and death among surgical patients.
