ABSTRACT

This study was designed to cognize the perceived influence of alcohol consumption on academic performance among students of the University of Benin. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The research design is a descriptive type of survey design, the study population covers all the students in faculty of education. A sample size of 190 respondents was selected using the simple random sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was a well-structured questionnaire which was validated by the project supervisor and two other lecturers from the department of Health, safety and Environmental Education.

Collated data was analyzed using descriptive statistical tools such as frequency and percentage table. Data collection was performed using a pre-tested questionnaire and the result revealed that majority of the students who drank reported negative consequences while the minority reported otherwise, hence the influence of alcohol on students is high.

As a result of the findings of this study, it was recommended that, the government should create avenues for sensitization and enlightenment on the consequences of alcohol abuse, parent should prevent alcohol abuse among adolescents and also increasing the age at which illicit drugs can be purchased.
