ABSTRACT

ASUU strike no doubt wields a tremendous influence on the academic development of students in Nigerian Universities as a result of long period of school closures ranging from reduction of interest in academic works, loss of memory and elongation of study period. This study investigated the perceived impact of the industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on students’ motivation to learn.

 

The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The simple random and convenience sampling technique were used to select students from three course area in Department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology (CIT), Faulty of Education, University of Benin. The sample of the study comprised one hundred and twenty students. A questionnaire titled “Impact of ASUU Strike on Undergraduates Motivation Questionnaire (IASUMQ)” was used in the collection of data. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation for the research questions and T-test and ANOVA foe the research hypothesis. All hypothesis were tested at 0.05 level of significance.

 

Findings revealed among others that the strike did not adversely affect students’ motivation to learn and Students’ perception on the impact of ASUU strike on their motivation to learn did not differ based on sex. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended amongst others that In order to avoid subsequent strike actions, there should be a collaborative action plan by the Government, University Management and+ the Academic Staff Union of University.
