ABSTRACTS
Suicide is a serious public health problem and is a global phenomenon in all regions of the world. It is an intentional or voluntary determination to end one's life. Every suicide is a tragedy that affects families, communities and entire countries, the world at large and has long-lasting effects on the people left behind. The social, economic and psychological effects of suicide are unbearable in most societies of the world. Although it affects all ages, it is very common among youths and adolescents within the ages 15-25yrs and it's on a high increase in Nigerian University undergraduates as they tend to be more vulnerable to mental and psychological issues.
This is a study carried out to investigate the Perceived factors of suicide among university of Benin students in Benin city, Edo state. Five research questions were raised to guide the study and the study was limited to University of Benin students. A descriptive method of study was employed and random sampling technique was used for the study. The questionnaire was administered personally by the researcher to the respondents that were randomly selected from the sample students.The research instrument used for the study is a structured questionnaire which was validated by my supervisor, an expert in Health Safety and Environmental Education in Education Faculty and further administered personally by the researcher to the respondents that were randomly selected from the sample students.The data generated was analyzed using descriptive statistics.
From findings, it was discovered that academic workload, parental pressure, break-up in relationship and depression being a dominant factor are the perceived factors of suicide most associated with and common among University of Benin students. Both genders are prone to suicide. Recommendations were made also; raising more effective health educators and counsellors from various fields especially mental aspect of students. Also an introduction of student intervention strategy and hotline services, parents, lecturers and student to student relationship amongst others.
