ABSTRACT

This study investigates the perceived factors influencing the teaching and learning of English Language in Senior Secondary School in Benin Metropolis.  Six (r) research questions were raised to guide the study.

A sample size for this study was Three Hundred and Seventy seven (377) Female Junior Secondary School students representing ten percent (10%) of the total population. This was selected through simple random sampling techniques. The major instrument used for this study was the questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed and validated by experts in the department of Adult and Non-formal Education, Faculty of Education University of Benin. Data were analysed using descriptive statistical techniques such as tables, frequencies counts, and simple percentages

Findings of the study revealed that the adequacy of instructional materials assist the teacher to present a lesson to the learners in a logical manner, instructional materials enable both the teachers and students to participate actively and effectively in lesson sessions, it give room for acquisition of skills and knowledge and development of self- confidence and the non-availability of instructional materials are major causes of ineffectiveness of the school system, it was further revealed that that there are lack of qualified teachers in the school and the few teacher in the schools teachers in the school possess high mastery of their subject content. It was recommended that employment of qualified English language teachers for effective teaching and learning of the subject. It also recommended that provision of language laboratories and equipment for students to practicalise what they learn in the classroom
