PERCEIVED FACTORS INFLUENCING THE ADMINISTRATIVE JOB PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS PRINCIPALS IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

 ABSTRACT

The study analyzed the perceived factors influencing the administrative job performance of secondary school principals in Egor Local Government area of Edo State with respect to sex of principals, location and size of school. Five (5) research questions were raised for the study out  of  which  three  (3)  hypotheses  were  formulated.  The  study  adopted  the  descriptive  survey research design. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select the 112 registered teachers who formed the sample of the study. A questionnaire titled “Perceived Factors Influencing the Administrative  Job  Performance  of  Principals  Questionnaire  (PFIAJPPQ)”  was  used  for  the study. It was self designed, built around the research questions by the researcher and validated by the researchers’ supervisor. Its reliability was established at 0.87 using Cronbach alpha method. The  demographic  data  was  presented  in  frequency  tables  and  analyzed  using  percentages. Research  questions  1  and  2  were  analyzed  using  mean,  standard  deviation,  mean-percent  and rank order respectively while hypotheses 1-3 were tested using t test statistics for two independent samples at 0.05 level of significance. 

Findings revealed that: the level of administrative job performance of secondary school principals in Egor Local Government Area was high with an aggregate mean of 3.09.; principals’ administrative job performance is negatively influenced in the discharge of the following duties: stimulation and provision of opportunities for staff professional growth, planning for the improvement  of  community  life  and  resolving  the  classroom  problems  of  teachers;  level  of administrative  job  performance  differs  between  male  and  female  principals;  also  perceived factors influencing secondary schools principals’ administrative job performance differs in urban and  rural  schools  while  no  significant  difference  exist  in  the  factors  influencing  secondary schools principals’ administrative job performance in large and small schools.

It was recommended that the government should organize compulsory periodic refresher courses, seminars, workshops and conferences for principals in order to update their knowledge in the area of school job administration and management especially with regards to supervision of staffs and school public relations to improve on the job. Strategies to aid principals in-service or training should be vigorously emphasized in such programme; would be principals should also be incorporated into the programme.
