ABSTRACT Background: Further, Studies have shown that the component of the environment largely influences the probability of an individual’s perception towards and participation in physical activity, Therefore, it is important to ascertain the most modifiable aspect of the environment in other to establish a healthy community and a physical activity enabling environment. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between perceived environmental correlates and physical activity among community dwelling adults in Benin metropolis. Methods: A multi stage sampling technique was used to recruit 366 participants in Benin metropolis who met the inclusion criteria, the level of physical activity of each participant was obtained using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire - short form (IPAQ-SF), selected environmental variables were assessed using Physical Activity Neighborhood Environmental Scale (PANES) and the neighborhood walkability was objectively assessed using Neighborhood Environmental Walkability Scale (NEWS-Africa), respectively. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse data. Alpha level was set at p<0.05. Results: From the result shown Table 3, 47.7% of the participants had low levels of physical activity, 41.1% reported moderate level of PA while only 11.2% had high levels of physical activity as measured using the IPAQ-SF. The result showed a significant association between the various locations in the study (p=0.00), neighborhood type (high SES/low walkability) ( p=0.01), and PA. Only traffic safety was significantly associated with PA (r=0.11, p=0.04).
