Abstract
Paternity disputes, characterized by uncertainty surrounding a child's biological parentage, represent a complex and emotionally challenging issue with significant psychological implications, particularly for the girl child. Paternity disputes are not uncommon in Oredo Local Government Area, with implications that extend beyond legal matters to encompass the emotional well-being of the children involved. While these disputes af ect both genders, this abstract focuses on their unique psychological impact on girl children. The study specifically assessed the prevalence and frequency of paternity disputes in Oredo Local Government Area, focusing on cases involving girl children; examined the psychological ef ects experienced by girl children who are involved in paternity disputes, including emotional distress, anxiety, and self- esteem issues, identified coping mechanisms and support systems utilized by girl children to deal with the psychological impact of paternity disputes and explored the role of family dynamics, social support, and community attitudes in shaping the psychological well-being of girl children during paternity disputes The study utilized the cross-sectional survey research design because the respondents were from dif erent economic background. The population of the study was 4313 (population projection, 2022). The sample size of the study was 400 research participants. The study utilized the semi- structured questionnaire as the instrument of data collection. The study also utilized the quantitative method of data collection. The results of the study were analyzed with the use of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (23.0) programme and they were presented using tables and charts. The theoretical framework for understanding this phenomenon draws from attachment theory, stress and coping theory, social learning theory, and ecological systems theory, among others. These frameworks help elucidate the complex interplay of individual, familial, cultural, and societal factors in shaping the psychological impact of paternity disputes on girl children. Paternity disputes present a multifaceted issue with profound psychological consequences for girl children in Oredo Local Government Area. Understanding these impacts and implementing supportive interventions can contribute to the well-being and resilience of these children as they navigate the challenges associated with paternity disputes. Recognizing the psychological challenges faced by girl children in paternity disputes, this abstract underscores the importance of creating awareness and support systems tailored to their needs. These may include accessible counseling services, positive family dynamics, community sensitization campaigns to combat stigmatization, and legal protections that prioritize the child's emotional well-being.
