ABSTRACT
This study investigated Parents’ social background and the academic performance of pre-primary school children in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo state. This study also sought to find out if there is any relationship between parents social background and the academic performance of pre-primary school children, four research questions were raised to guide the study. Two were asked directly and two were formulated into hypotheses and tested at 0.05 level of significance. This study adopted the descriptive survey research design; the 50 parents from 5 pre-primary schools. 10 parents per school, in Ovia North East Local Government Area, formed the sample of the study. The instrument for data collection was a checklist titled “Parents’ social background and the academic performance of pre-primary school children in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo state”. The data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, Pearson r and the Fisher statistics. Among the findings of the study is that there is no significant difference in the relationship between the parental social background and level of academic performance of pre-primary school pupils.Based on the findings, addressing parental social background is a critical factor in improving the academic performance of pre-primary school pupils. To maximize educational outcomes, strategies should be developed to support pupils from various social background, recognizing that some pupils may require more assistance than others to excel academically.
