ABSTRACT

This study examined parental involvement as correlate of secondary school students’ academic performance in Oredo local government area, Edo State. Four research objectives were raised to give focus to the study and these objectives centered on the extent of parental involvement in students’ education, the influence of parental involvement on the academic performance of students, the parental home factors that can influence the academic performance of students and the parental school factors that can influence the academic performance of students in public secondary schools in Oredo LGA? Several scholarly literatures were reviewed on the concept of parental involvement and student academic performance.

The study made use of descriptive correlational research design and a structured questionnaire was used to obtain relevant information from the respondents for empirical analysis. The population of the study comprised of all public secondary school students in the 13 public secondary schools in Oredo with a population of 1500 students. From the population, a sample size of 150 respondents was randomly selected for the study (i.e. 10% of the total respondent population).

From the study the following results were obtained: that there is high level of parental involvement in students’ education in public secondary schools in Oredo local government, that parental involvement have high influence on student academic performance. From the results of the findings, the following were recommended: Parents should make it a top priority to constantly get involve and support their children academic activities because when a child is well educated, it brings about progress in the family and the society at large. Parents should make it their primary obligations to provide their children with all the relevant learning materials needed both in school and at home which will enhance their children academic performance.
