ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of social media engagement on the academic performance of Secondary School Students in Ovia North East Local Government of Edo State..

The population of this study will consist of JSS 3 students in the twenty-eight (28) public Junior Secondary Schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State with a total of 1, 284 (one thousand, two hundred and eighty four) students. The sample of 100 (JSS3) students were used in this study. Data obtained from the questionnaire administered was analyzed using percentage, mean statistics and standard deviation.

The findings from the research revealed that Facebook is the most commonly used  social media among students, there is a high level of social media engagement among secondary school students, there is a relationship between social media engagement  and students  reading habits and there is a relationship between social media engagement and students  performance among students. Based on the findings it was recommended that school administrators should adopt the strategy of online learning by channelling assignments or discussions on social media platforms to help inculcate the habit of using these media platforms for academic work by the students
