PARENTAL ATTITUDES TOWARD GIRL-CHILD EDUCATION: A CASE STUDY OF EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE, NIGERIA.

ABSTRACT

The study investigated parents’ attitude towards girl child education in Egor Local Government Area. This study adopted the Descriptive Survey Research Design. The population for this study comprised of the heads of households in the selected communities in all the eighteen (18) wards in Egor Local Government Area with a total number of one thousand. The study adopted the systematic random sampling technique to select a sample of 70 participants was used which represented 14 percent out of 1000 population of the study area. The study employed a structured questionnaire titled Parents’ Attitude Towards Girl Child Education Questionnaire (PATEQ) as instrument for data collection. The questionnaire was developed based on the study objectives and research questions and consisted of two sections.  A test-retest reliability method was used to establish the reliability of the instrument. The copies of the questionnaire were administered to twenty (20) respondents sample drawn from the population. After two weeks, the same instrument were re-administered to the same group. The data collected after both administrations were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistics in order to determine the reliability of the instrument and, a reliability index or co-efficient was 0.74 was established. The data collected will be analyzed by using mean  and standard deviation statistical tools based on a four-point rating scale.

The study concluded that parents attitude demonstrated towards girl child education was negative as they were reluctant to enroll their wards in school as it was perceived as a taboo based on some religious and societal factors. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that teachers and school, principals should engage in en1ightening the parents on the need for girl-child education for community and societal development, Government should make school fees for girl-children to be free.
