ABSTRACT

The study investigated the parental attitude as correlate of girl child education in urban and rural areas: a case study of some selected schools in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and examined. The sample size for the study was made up of 200 respondents. Data collected from the respondents was analyzed using descriptive statistics, precisely mean and standard deviation, while all hypotheses were tested for significance at an alpha level of 0.05 using inferential statistics, especially the independent sample t-test statistics and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The findings from the study include that cultural norms, child marriage, early pregnancy, and policies and legal framework constituted problems militating against girl child education. It was concluded that there is significant difference in parental attitude between those in urban and rural areas in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State. The study recommended among others that there should be establishment of communitybased initiatives aimed at raising awareness about the importance of girl child education, targeting both urban and rural areas.
