Abstract
The study investigated parental and peer group influence on students’ performance in English language: a case study of senior secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and answered.
The research design adopted for this study is the descriptive survey research design. The sample size for the study was made up of 100 respondents which were randomly selected from each schools in the local government. Using the simple random sampling technique, 5 students each were randomly selected from the 20 public secondary schools in the local government, thus making a total sample size of 100 respondents. Analysis of data was done using mean score and standard deviation.
The findings from the study include that there is a significant impact of peer group influence on students’ performance in English language in senior secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. It was concluded that there is a significant impact of parental influence on students’ performance in English language in senior secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. It was therefore recommended among others that secondary school management should encourage and facilitate greater parental involvement in their children's education. This can be achieved through regular parent-teacher meetings, workshops on effective parenting strategies, and creating a supportive home environment for learning.
