ABSTRACT
An investigation study on helminth parasite of fresh water fish in Ikoro river Ovia North East Local Government Area of Benin city, Edo state was carried out from April to August. 50 fishes of seven species were examined, comprising Synodontis petricola, Parachanna sp, Chrysichthys sp, Ariopsis felis, Malapterurus beninensis, Nessorhanphus ingolfinus and Heterobranchus bidorsalis. The overall prevalence of infection was 14.0%, while Synodontis has 17.39% infection prevalence and Parachanna has 100% infection prevalence. The parasites isolated from the fish comprised, Spirocamallanus spiralis (nematode), Rhyacodrilus (annelid). Some unidentified cysts were also recorded. The nematodes were more in number, and the majority of the parasites were isolated from the intestine with only one of the parasite found in the swim bladder. It is suggested that further studies should be carried out in Ikoro River to aid a comprehensive report of the fish fauna and parasites in the river.
