ABSTRACT
Methylene blue which is a constituent of waste water from the textile industry continues to pose a threat to the environment hence this research work focused on the oxidative degradation of methylene blue dye using date seeds as bioadsorbent. The aim was to investigate the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solution using modified and unmodified date seed powder. Batch studies were carried out to determine the optimum conditions for the adsorption process (adsorbent dosage, contact time, pH, initial dye concentration and temperature) and the rate and nature of the adsorption process were analysed using three kinetic models: pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, intra particle and Elovich model. The percentage dye removal for unmodified was 98.1 % and that for the modified was 98.75% with optimal results observed for unmodified as 2.5 g, 90 min, pH 9, 25 mg/L and 50oC, and that for the modified as 2.5 g, 90 min, pH 11, 100 mg/L and 50oC. Observation of the different traces in the graphical representations of each model showed that the kinetics of the adsorption of MB on modified date seeds is of Elovich model type, since values of the correlation coefficient are very close to one compared to the other models. From the results, it was concluded that date seed has a high percentage removal for methylene blue.
