ABSTRACT
Textile wastewater is a major contributor to water pollution due to its mismanagement in disposal, complexity of component dyes and its high resistance to biodegradation. This study focused on the oxidative degradation of methyl violet 2B dye using date seeds as bioadsorbent and the aim is to investigate the potential use of calcined date seed powder as a bioadsorbent for the removal of methyl violet dye from aqueous solution. The batch experimental setup was used to determine the optimum conditions for the adsorption process such as adsorbent dosage (0.5 g to 2.5 g), contact time (30 to 120 minutes), pH (4 to 11), initial dye concentration (25 to 100 mg/L) and temperature (30 to 50oC). The rate and nature of the adsorption process was analysed using three kinetic models: pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and Elovich model. The results showed optimum values for the process at maximum efficiency: adsorbent dosage of 2.5 g gave the best percentage dye removal at 59.17%, contact time of 90 minutes gave the best percentage dye removal at 98.45%, pH 11 gave the best percentage dye removal at 81.91%, temperature of 40oC gave the best percentage dye removal at 72.93% and initial dye concentration of 45 mg/L gave the best percentage dye removal at 73.41%. The Pseudo-second order kinetic model was the best fit for the adsorption process. From the results, it was observed that calcined date seed powder is a good and environmental friendly adsorbent for the removal of methyl violet dye.
