ABSTRACT

The study attempts to empirically investigate the relationship between ownership structure and firm performance in Nigeria insurance sector. The analysis involves the use of two general known method namely, statistical and econometric methods in the view of providing a rich background for the investigation using Return on Asset as dependent variable and three explanatory variables managerial ownership, institutional ownership and ownership concentration independent variables.

A sample of seven listed firms between 2014 and 2018 were examined using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and multivariate panel regression technique. The various analyses were employed to examine the impact of ownership structure on firm performance in Nigeria insurance sector.

The empirical results revealed the following findings. managerial ownership and institutional ownership have positive significant impact on Return on Asset, while ownership concentration does not show any significant impact on Return on Asset. We recommend among others; , SEC should ensure that potential institutional investors are encouraged to invest more as institutional ownership impact on financial performance of insurance s firms in Nigeria.
