ABSTRACT
This research explores how outdoor spaces at the University of Benin are used and identifies potential areas for enhancement that influence students' daily lives, impacting both their academic success and overall life quality. Through a thorough evaluation of current outdoor facilities, usage trends, and characteristics of the spaces, this study seeks to create effective strategies that foster student well-being and academic achievement while aligning with the university's educational objectives. The analysis considers various factors, including design features, seating layouts, natural elements, and patterns of student behavior. It will provide suggestions for developing supportive spaces, such as environments conducive to studying, areas for social interactions, and features that promote wellness, aimed at creating a more effective and student-focused campus setting. What constitutes a thoughtfully designed outdoor area? A thoughtfully designed outdoor area fosters comfortable and productive settings that facilitate both educational and social interactions while optimizing the advantages of natural features. Steps to develop effective outdoor spaces take into account the entire lifecycle of the area: the design phase, continual maintenance, and possible future modifications. A well-constructed outdoor environment preserves functionality while enhancing the physical and mental health of its users. As awareness grows concerning the environmental influences on student achievement and the mental health challenges faced in higher education, the imperative to offer carefully planned outdoor areas becomes increasingly important. Recent educational studies indicate that outdoor campus environments play a significant role in influencing student participation, stress levels, and academic performance. A well-designed outdoor space balances all aspects of student needs by providing an optimized mix of study areas, social zones, natural elements, and comfort features.
