OUTCOMES OF LOW VISION AID PROVISION: SUCCESS RATE IN BENIN CITY

ABSTRACT

Background: The most effective way to reduce the degree of handicap associated with visual impairment is to provide low vision aids (LVAs) as a part of a comprehensive low vision rehabilitative service. When dispensed appropriately, these simple magnifying devices can enhance residual vision and permit people with impaired sight to perform daily tasks such as reading. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the success rate obtained by low vision patients using low vision aids. Methodology: The study involved 57 low vision patients with mean age of 45.06±23.25.The subjects VA were taken before low vision intervention, subjects VA was then taken with the low vision aids to determine the various level of improvements which are level 1(Two lines improvement in VA), level 2(Three lines improvement in VA), level 3(Four lines improvement in VA) and level 4(more than four lines improvement in VA or more). Results: The study found that majority of the participants had improved distant and near VA of (4/10,4/16 and 1M) and level 4 improvements in VA with the low vision aids,findings also revealed that majority of the patients who visited the low vision clinic for intervention were people with oculocutaneous albinism and that majority of subjects had mild/moderate grade of low vision regardless of gender. Conclusion: The study concludes that the success rate was 87% and there were no significant relationship between participants age, gender, etiology, low vision aids and their level of improvement (P>0.05).
