SUMMARY

This study is an analysis of origin and evolution (advancement) of migration of Edo people into Europe. From the analysis it is evident that the quest for a better life and the attempt to escape poverty has influenced a major segment of Nigeria's population to seek alternatives for better livelihood prospects for themselves and their families. Migration, be it regular or irregular, to Europe and other parts of the world is usually a sought after option considered by those seeking greener pastures. The restrictions and expenses involved in regular migration make individuals opt for irregular migration as an appealing and viable option and this desire for a better life has led many young Nigerians to elect to be smuggled or to fall prey to the deceptions of criminal gangs.

Travelling and trafficking of minors and young women is a social phenomenon that is spreading across Edo state and environ. Trafficking in women mainly consists of the movement of people from one country to another for sexual exploitation. The person who recruits, as well as the persons who accompanies and the person who receives them in the place of destination are traffickers. Generally, people are trafficked from developing to developed countries in search of better opportunities.
