ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was the evaluate oral literature as a medium of teaching moral values of student in English language in University of Benin, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The research design employed was descriptive research design.

The population of the study consists of 50 students randomly selected from the 300 level and 400 level student of the University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State with a sample search of 50, the instrument for data collection was the questionnaire which was validated and certified before administration. The data gathered was analysed using sample percentage and frequency count.

The result of the study showed that students have positive attitude towards the teaching of moral values. It also revealed that Oral literature can be said to be a veritable tool to help teaching moral, more so oral literature on moral values enables children to understand their society. The research also reveals that oral literature create myth, legends and heroes to help stir interest in community development. The study recommends that University authorities should make some plans and policies to make teaching methodology better. It further recommends that lecturers should be equipped and trained in other to be well grounded in teaching of moral values through oral literature.
