ABSTRACT

In many cities of developing countries only about 60% of Solid Waste (SW) generated is collected as SW generation exceeds collection capacity. This research work seeks to proffer solutions to the inefficiency of Solid Waste Management System in Egor local Government Area with focus on Solid Waste (SW) Collection, Storage and Transportation GIS optimization approach.

A GIS database was modelled to simulate the mechanisms of SW collection: storage and transportation were simulated. The vehicle routing problem of prioritizing and selecting the shortest (efficient/most economical) routes was solved using Esri Arc GIS Network Analyst Tool. The Study area was delineated into 20 waste collection catchment zones and for analysis purposes, three (3) trucks were assigned to three (3) routes in each of the zones. Two scenarios were modelled: the first, represented the existing Solid Waste (SW) collection and transportation mechanism with waste majorly dumped openly from house to house (at 15m apart). While the Optimized scenario was the strategic spacing of properly SW in nylon bags placed in bins 60m apart.

The study showed less waste were picked up in the existing collection system, compared with the optimized system which had twice as much wastes collected in the same daily time schedule.

The optimized system also indicated lesser distances travelled in some zones with corresponding travel time reduction. In conclusion, the study revealed that more waste collection catchment areas can be integrated into the optimized and more efficient collection system thereby reducing the volume of uncollected waste in the Local Government Area (LGA).
