ABSTRACT
Energy sources and supply in Nigeria and the world at large is a major issue that is concerning, ranging from its shortage or low availability to its effects on the environment. Progress have been made on obtaining a more environmentally friendly sources of fuel which would be useful for various domestic, industrial and commercial purposes. The work of this research takes a shift from the regular usage of food crops as well as a shift from the regular bioethanol fuel, holding to the fact that a continuous usage of food crops tends to bring about shortage of food crops and high cost of purchase. The research tends to evaluate the production of fermentable sugar obtained from simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) of Elephant grass with glucose supplementation. The optimum pretreatment condition using alkaline pretreatment was analyzed using the respond surface methodology (RSM) and was found to be at a temperature of 65.832°C, Time 40 minutes and acid concentration of 0.302M NaOH, which gave a sugar concentration yield of 564.282. The pretreated condition was then used in enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation.
