ABSTRACT
Opobo and her neighbors in precolonial times were highly centralized city states with complex political institutions. The city-state of Opobo and its neighbours in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria had a complex and dynamic political system in precolonial times. These societies were characterized not only by high degree of social and political stratification, but with a ruling class of kings and chiefs at the top and a majority of commoners at the bottom. The political system was also highly decentralized, with each city-state having its own autonomous government.
