OMOLUABI: MORALITY IN YORUBA CULTURE, AN ETHIC OF VIRTUE

ABSTRACT

This study argues that the foundation f Yoruba morality can be located in an ethics of virtue. Unlike deontologism and consequentialism which emphasise moral rules and consequences of an action, Yoruba ethics is based on virtue. Yoruba ethics of virtue is not a normative rival to deontological and consequentialism but a valuable supplement to them. The study attempts a definition of virtue within the Yoruba context and opines that duties, moral rules and the consequences of moral action are judged among the Yoruba by virtuous acts. These virtues emerge and are grounded in and within the Yoruba social traditions. Thus there is a focus on the cultivation of a virtuous character(Omoluabi).It is that which guides such questions as what sort of person should be and how we should live? The method adopted in carry out this study is evaluative and hermeneutical method. The study establishes that for the Yoruba, it is more beneficial for the individual, family and the society to focus on virtuous acts than on vicious act. This is based on the understanding that virtuous acts are an essential ingredient for the development , growth and happiness of the self , society and well-being of all.
