ABSTRACT

The study ascertains the perceived impact of fuel subsidy removal on civil servant standard of living in Okada in Edo State. Three research questions were developed in line with the purpose to guide the study. This study adopted a descriptive survey design. The population of the study comprised of 14 ministries in Okada, Edo State. Simple random techniques were used in drawing a sample of 7 Ministries from the 14 Ministries in Okada, Edo State. More so, simple random sampling technique was equally used to draw a sample of 10 Civil servants from each of the 7 selected Ministries, making a total sample of 70 Civil servants. Structured questionnaire titled Perceived impact of fuel subsidy removal on civil servants’standard of living (PIFSRCSSLQ) The instrument was validated by two experts one in Department of Measurement and Evaluation and the other from Business Education, Department of Vocational and Technical Education, University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State. The instrument yielded a coefficient of 0.85 when analysed using Pearson Product Moment correlation to ascertain its reliability. Validated copies of the questionnaires were distributed to the civil servants in the selected ministries in Okada by hand with help of two experienced research Assistant. On retrieval of the instrument after administration of questionnaire, 100 were retrieved out of the 180 distributed. Mean and standard deviation statistical tool were used to analyze the data retrieved from the respondents and the decision rule was bench marked at 2.50. Finding reveals among others that, fuel subsidy removal affects civil servants' socio-economic status in Okada. It was recommended among others that Policies should be implemented to support the social and economic development of communities where civil servants reside to offset the negative impacts on social cohesion.
