ABSTRACT

There has been a steady increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity globally and the rate of increase in African countries like Nigeria is not lower than that observed in developed countries of the world .Obesity is defined as when a person has a body mass index [BMI (kg/m2), dividing a person’s weight by the square of their height] greater than or equal to 30 and over the years, Obesity has been characterized by multiple hemostatic disturbances in blood coagulation. The activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) is an end-point clotting time assay and detects the abnormalities in blood clotting and measures the overall speed at which blood clots forms. This study was aimed at investigating effect of obesity on activated partial thromboplastin time in young obese subjects when compared with non obese subject. A population of 60 healthy subjects from the University of Benin within the age 18-30 years was used for this experiment and they were grouped into two groups : 30 non obese serving as the control subjects and 30 subjects serving as the test subjects. It was carried out across university of Benin environment in Benin city. The subjects was asked to fill a questionarie which contained information such as their age, weight and height in order to calculate their body mass index. 4.5ml of blood specimen was drawn and dispensed into 0.5ml sodium citrate bottles from all the subjects and analysed for activated partial thromboplastin time . The result from the research revealed a decrease in the APTTK concentration in obese subjects when compared with the control subjects although not statistically significant. This slight decrease in the concentration of APTTK could be as a result of enhanced platelet activation and increased fibrinogen concentration.
