ABSTRACT

Avocado leaf (Persea americana) are notable for their high content of monosaturated fats, vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. Additionally, they possess functional properties, including antioxidants activity, which contribute to their potential health benefits This study was undertaken with the aim of evaluating the nutritional and functional composition of the methanol leaf extract of Persea americana. Proximate analysis of the methanol leaf extract of Persea americana was carried out using the AOAC methods. Elemental and phytochemical analysis of the methanol extract of the leaves of the plant was also carried out using atomic absorption spectrometric (AAS) and Gas chromatography in tandem with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Proximate analysis of the methanol leaf extract reveals that it contains nutrients such as carbohydrates, fat and little amounts of protein and fiber. Mineral analysis of the extract revealed the presence of essential minerals such as calcium, copper, magnesium, iron and manganese, and Vit C necessary for the metabolic wellbeing of an individual. The methanol leaf extract of Persea americana is a promising source of bioactive phytochemicals and nutrients that could be a useful source of nutrients and minerals that can be helpful to mankind.
