ABSTRACT
This work examines the nonverbal communication in burial ceremonies in Ibusa. The aim of this work is to show the importance and peculiarities of nonverbal communication in Ibusa burial ceremonies. The motivating factor for this research is the negligence and ignorance of individuals to the importance of nonverbal communication in relation to our daily existence. The theoretical framework adopted for this study is that of Uwajeh (2010) Performative linguistic theory. The data for this work was collected from primary source (interview) and secondary sources. Findings show that though nonverbal communication is an important part of human communication, which has its advantages as well as disadvantages. It could also be influenced by some major phenomenon like gender, culture and context. Nonverbal communication can also function in situations where verbal means of communication may have restrictions, for instance in a noisy environment. This work therefore open one’s encourage and enlighten individuals as well as those interested in the study of communication on the importance, and the need for more research to be carried out on nonverbal means of communication. The awareness of nonverbal communication is vital to creating competent communication.
