ABSTRACT
Language is a divine concept with a functional mechanism that remains a subject of wonder to humanity till date. It expresses the thoughts of a man as well as the collective principles and ideologies that a society exist. The culture of a society is exhibited through language.
This study examined the Semantic interpretation of some non-verbal items in Emevor Traditional Marriage, with the aim of having a deeper understanding of what some signs and symbols stands for. The methodology adopted for this research is based on descriptive linguistics which attempts to describe the signs and symbols in terms of its current usage. The data employed for this research was obtained from both Primary and Secondary sources.
The theory used in this research suggests that sign is a representation of the intention of the communicator, and that a sign could be verbal or non-verbal. The theory accounts for everything that can be seen as a sign. It also gives a deeper understanding and interpretation of signs.
The analysis showed that objects and sounds are significant in communication. It also showed that there is no item used in Emevor Traditional Marriage that doesn't represent something. In this research, it is discovered that non-verbal means of communication is as Effective the verbal means of communication. Virtually everything in the society is meaningful and can be a significant sign to a speech community.
