Summary
This study was aimed at examining the role of Nollywood movies in Nigerian politics, the various ways politics is portrayed in movies and the adverse effect it has on viewers. This work has established that the mass media is one of the most pervasive way images and messages are communicated to people and an agent of socialization and information. The media plays a major role in shaping the perception and thoughts of the audience through the messages they communicate and the interpretations they also give the messages. Nollywood being the Nigerian film industry has been recognized as a sizeable part of the mass media, through its audio-visual power, has been able to shape the perceptions of the Nigerian audience, especially in the portrayal of Nigerian political system. Summarily, it is obvious that Nollywood movies have played a major role in curbing the ills in the political system in Nigeria. This study has also unraveled the audience's perception of the portrayal of politics in Nollywood movies as being negative but, realistic. Constant exposure to this content would change the behaviour of the audience and the society at large towards politics.
