ABSTRACT

In a nutshell, Nigerians are constantly engaged in migration due to political instability, poverty, an inefficient educational sector, and insecurity within the nation. Poor governance and ineffective public services are variables that make the citizenry to lose confidence in the government and leads to apathy in politics while also fostering the morale to leave the country to seek better standards of living abroad. Nigeria ought to strengthen cooperation with European countries and international organizations to combat human trafficking networks and the likes. Joint efforts in intelligence sharing, law enforcement and victim support can help in disrupting smuggling routes and provide a deterrent, making illegal migration less appealing while also encouraging legal pathways for migration. By adopting these recommendations, Nigeria can better address the problems of migration and develope more effective and strategic policy responses to safeguard it's citizens and combat human trafficking and exploitation. Knowledge on many of the issues of migration in Nigeria is still low and incomprehensive. There is, therefore a call for better and more comprehensive knowledge of the phenomena than ever before in order to manage migration better for development purposes. This becomes very important as many gaps in knowledge in international migration has thwarted attempts made up to date in relating migration to development to fall short of the expected. For instance, even though the Nigerian and Chadian immigration into Nigeria may not cease, data and information on them should be up to date and accurate; and there should be ways of utilizing such data and information to the best benefit of the source and destination. Likewise, even though emigration can't end, the government should put in place a favourable atmosphere for potential immigrants to reside and develope the state. Moreover, there is the need to know more about how Nigerian emigrants fare in destinations they move to. This is due to the multiple reports of negative effects they've had on some destination areas, the problems that they themselves are face with in particular, when they are ill-equipped to cope with the demands and conditions of living in new environment; hence the multiple cases of deportation, jails and even death sentences upon the violators.
