Summary
The focus of this research was to critically examine how the Niger-Delta crisis affects the economy of Nigeria. Through the historical background and origin of the Niger-Delta crisis, we saw how the Niger-Delta agitation began and took different forms at different periods.
The nature and manifestation of the Niger-Delta crisis portrays it as a response to of the Niger-Delta people to ruthless military expedition of the Nigerian Armed Forces to their legitimate demands.
The terrible condition of the Niger-Delta region due to long term neglect on the part of the Nigerian government and multi-national oil companies. Besides, the grievances of the people of the region are based on environmental damages of the area by oil exploration and exploitation. The attendant agitation has resulted in series of challenges ranging from loss of revenue, destruction of infrastructure, loss of lives, unemployment, divestment and ultimately, underdevelopment.
