ABSTRACT
In this research, the protective effects of Ocimum gratissimus (OG) extract against cyanide-induced kidney damage in New Zealand rabbits were investigated. The kidneys are highly sensitive to cyanide toxicity due to their oxygen-dependent metabolic activity. The study aimed to assess how OG extract could safeguard kidney function and tissue structure in rabbits exposed to cyanide. Rabbits were divided into four groups: control, cyanide-exposed, OG extract-treated, and OG extract plus cyanide-treated groups. Cyanide toxicity was induced by injecting potassium cyanide, while OG extract was given orally for a specific period. Kidney function was evaluated by measuring serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and urinary protein levels. Kidney tissue samples were examined for histopathological changes. The results showed that cyanide exposure led to kidney dysfunction as evidenced by increased serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and urinary protein levels. However, treatment with OG extract mitigated these effects, suggesting a protective role in kidney function. Histological analysis revealed that OG extract helped preserve the kidney tissue structure from cyanide-induced damage. The study demonstrates the potential nephroprotective properties of OG extract against cyanide-induced kidney toxicity in rabbits, indicating its possible therapeutic use in safeguarding kidneys from toxic insults. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms of action and optimize the dosage and duration of OG extract treatment for maximal protective effects on the kidneys. These findings contribute to the growing evidence supporting the use of herbal remedies like OG extract in promoting kidney health and combating toxic kidney damage.
