ABSTRACT

The main aim of this research was to establish the existence of language adaptation in the three major indigenous languages and the Nigerian pidgin to the emergence of neologism during the occurrence of COVID-19 and to also outline the critical influences of neologisms on the languages under study in this research.

This study was considered in order to understand how the languages under study in this research evolved with changes that arise from technological advancement, global health factors, scientific advancement and the likes.

The sample studied was mainly a handpicked number of different individuals who are speakers of the language considered for this study some of who are bilingual or multilingual.

The means of procuring the data for this research was through Social networking blogs, Newspapers, Social media platforms, Radio Adverts, some speakers of the languages under study, articles with similar relation to COVID-19 such as medical flyers or pamphlet.

Much of the result found is that there is an adaptation present in the languages under study in this research. The study found out some of the expression where in existence before COVID-19 and some were newly coined. Some of the words and expressions have extended meaning based on the context used during a conversation.
