ABSTRACT

Fashion as an art is a very important element. It is life-enhancing and like everything that gives pleasure, it is worth doing well. A great dress can make you remember what is beautiful about life. Colonization by the Europeans has greatly affected the fashion culture of the Nigeria people at large, thus bringing a rebirth in fashion, which gives room for fashion fusion of both traditional and Western elements of design from renowned artists and designers. Using the qualitative research method with practical approach, this research observes that, the fashion styles of Fela Kuti and Deola Sagoe focused on the incorporation of traditional African elements using vibrant colours and creating unique patterns, and blending it with Western styles.  Based on the findings, this research therefore recommended that there should be more researches on traditional fashion to sustain the people's cultural value. This will give room for different fashion choices considering how the dressing can reflect African identity and challenge Western fashion norms which served as a form of cultural resistance against colonial influences.
