NEGATIVE ATTITUDE OF EDUCATION STUDENTS TOWARDS TEACHING PROFESSION

ABSTRACT

This study was undertaken purposely to investigate causes and solution to the negative attitude of education students towards the teaching profession. The survey research technique was adopted for the study. The sample size for this study were four hundred (400) students from the University of Benin, Benin City. The instrument for the study was a questionnaire titled, “Students’ Questionnaire on Negative Attitude of Education Students Towards the Teaching Profession in the University of Benin, Benin City”. Before administration of the instrument to respondents, it was subjected to test retest method using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) statistics. After the administration and analysis of the data, results was shown on tables by the use of percentages and frequency.

Findings from the study revealed the negligent attitude of education students towards the teaching profession. It was also found that education students show negative attitude towards the teaching profession because they feel the welfare of teachers is of no concern to the government and other stakeholders in the education sector. Also, it was found that education students exhibit negative attitude towards the teaching profession due to the poor condition of schools as well as the societal rating of the profession.

It was therefore recommended that the government should ensure adequate funding and provision of facilities and resources for teaching in order to kindle the interest of education students towards the teaching profession. It was also recommended that career development programmes as well as sponsorship programmes should be organized for teachers in Nigeria in order to ignite their passion for the teaching profession. Also, it was recommended that teachers should be supplied with facilities and resources to teach students such as laptops, tables and other ICT gadgets.
