ABSTRACT
Music is used to express and discuss social issues bothering the nation. Music in this context plays the role of social control. It assists to improve Nigerian social system through enlightenment and social mobilization towards some desired group activity. This study investigated the role of music as agent of social mobilization. Research focus was on Fela Kuti’s “Sorrow, Tears and Blood” and “Zombie” as agents of advocacy and mobilization for positive social action. To achieve its goal, the study adopted the content analysis method of inquiry. Thus, the songs in the study’s focus were analyzed in tune with their treatment of the Nigerian malaise and advocacy for a social rethink and action. Finding showed that Fela Anikulapo Kuti, in his social mobilization and transformation crusades, engineered by his social views, invariably used the songs under study to speak truth 50 to power while galvanizing the nation to take concrete steps to address the multi-layer problems plaguing the Nigeria state.
