ABSTRACT
This study examines the important impact that historical locations and museums have on students' understanding of history and culture, using the University of Benin as a case study. In addition to being essential archives of cultural and historical legacy, museums and historical places also function as extracurricular educational resources. To acquire thorough data, a mixed-methods approach was used, including surveys, interviews, and observations. A sample of University of Benin students from different academic programs and levels participated in museum visits and historical site tours as part of the study. According to the study, children who visit historical sites and museums demonstrate a markedly increased sense of history and culture. A deep appreciation is fostered by direct engagement with real items, exhibits, and immersive experiences. It is advised that educational institutions, such as the University of Benin, incorporate frequent museum visits and historical site tours into their curricula in light of these findings. To optimize the educational value of this integration, guided conversations and assignments should be added. Furthermore, in order to lower cost barriers and improve accessibility for students, university partnerships with nearby 8 museums or historical sites ought to be promoted. Such actions can foster a deeper awareness of students' ancestry and heritage by making them more historically aware and culturally aware. The present study concludes that museums and historical sites play a crucial role in augmenting students' historical and cultural cognizance. It also offers practical suggestions for educational establishments to fully utilize these assets in molding well-rounded individuals.
