ABSTRACT
Solanum nigrum (Black nightshade) has been widely used in traditional medicine in India and in other parts of the world to treat certain diseases such as inflammatory conditions, fevers, diarrhea, liver disorders and chronic skin ailments. In this experiment, ethanol extract of Solanum nigrum leaves were prepared and evaluated for its protective feature against histamine induced broncho constriction in OVA sensitized Guinea pigs. The ethanol leaf extract of Solanum nigrum at a small dose of (50mg/kgbw) was able to protect the sensitized pigs against the histamine activity as against the pigs which were given the saline control. The standard drug aminophylline was also used and it showed the highest percentage of protection on the pigs but the protective effect of the Solanum nigrum extract was shown to increase as the dosage or concentrate increased. OVA sensitized pigs injected with a higher dosage of the extract (100mg/kgbw) and (200mg/kgbw) showed higher or stronger protective effects. This remarkable protective effects of the extracts was determined by the use of phenol red.
