MOTIVATION AND TEACHERS' JOB PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The study investigated Motivation and Teachers' Job Performance in the Public Senior Secondary Schools in Oredo Local Government area of Edo state. The reason for carrying out this project is because the researcher observed that there is a perception that some teachers are unable to help ensure that the desired educational goal is being achieved and this may be due to lack of motivation for the teachers.

The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population of the study consist of all the (14) public senior secondary schools in Oredo local government area of Edo State while all the (362) teachers were the respondents. Simple random sampling technique was used in selecting (7) seven schools from the (14) fourteen schools, while (14) fourteen teachers were selected from each of the (7) seven schools making a total of (98) ninety eight teachers as the respondents using convenient sampling technique. In order to elicit information from the respondents, a structured questionnaire titled "MOTIVATION AND TEACHERS' JOB PERFORMANCE QUESTIONNAIRE (MATJPQ)" was validated by the supervisor. The reliability of the instrument was tested using Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, the results was 0.75 while simple percentage was used to analyze the data collected.

The findings revealed that the level of teacher's motivation in public Senior Secondary Schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State is very low, while the level of teachers' job performance in Public Senior Secondary Schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, is very low. The study also found out that motivation do influence teachers job performance, while the level of teacher's job satisfaction is on the average. From the findings above, it was concluded that though motivational packages deployed to teachers was low in the public senior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, the few motivational packages that were made available to the teachers had a positive impact on teachers' job performance during the period of this study. The following recommendations were made among others that enefits such as free accommodation, job security and release of promotion as out when due should be made available to teachers in Public Senior Secondary Schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.
