ABSTRACT
The study focuses on morphosyntactic naming system of Igbo language. It aims to describe different morphosyntactic elements that are used in Igbo names and to explain the usages in which the Igbo naming system reflects and shapes the culture and identity of the Igbo people. The data for this study was collected using interview and documented data collected from primary and secondary sources. The generative grammar (GG) framework developed by Chomsky (1957) was employed for the analysis of the data. The Findings reveals a variety of morphosyntactic elements used in Igbo names including prefixes, suffixes and lexical roots. The study concludes that through the exploration of Igbo naming practices, one can gain insights into how names reflects and shapes the culture and identity of the Igbo people. The study recommends that these different morphosyntactic elements should be taught to people, integrated into the educational system and the contexts taken into consideration.
