ABSTRACT

The study examined a descriptive analysis of the morphosyntax of Esan ideophones. It took a typological look at the variation in the form and functions of ideophone in the language under study, and what ideophines currently are in the Esan language.

Data of this study were gathered from a variety of sources, including several settings where the Esan language is used freely, as well as published works in the language. Statements that contain ideophones were extracted from the data collected. The method of analysis adopted for this study was based on descriptive linguistics which attempts to describe a language in its own terms, rather than trying to force the language into a model based on another language.

The study found out that Esan ideophones were made up of the same phonemes as those of non-ideophionic words in the language. It was observed that they belong to the lexical classes of adjectives and adverbs. It was also observed that some ideophones fit into more than one lexical class depending on the context in which they are used. Some ideophones were observed to have been derived from verbs while some were inflectional as they preserve the semantic properties of the base from the syntactic analysis examined the syntactic environment in which ideophones occur to determine if they occur attributively and or predicatively. The contexts of usage of such ideophones determine their meanings.
